Ms. Wheelchair America
For more than 52 years, the Ms. Wheelchair America organization—a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit—has empowered women with disabilities to step into leadership, advocacy, and public service. Supported entirely by dedicated volunteers, including State Coordinators and Titleholders, the program spans 48 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, with more than 1,100 women serving as state titleholders. Unlike traditional pageants, Ms. Wheelchair America honors advocacy, communication, and accomplishment, culminating each year in the selection of a national spokesperson for the more than 70 million Americans living with disabilities.

History
Ms. Wheelchair America was established in 1972 by Dr. Philip K. Wood, a caring physician. Ms. Wheelchair America highlights the wonderful achievements and ongoing needs of individuals with mobility challenges. Driven by a passion for supporting women who use wheelchairs, Dr. Wood created this platform to amplify their voices and stories. He envisioned a world where the talents, capabilities, and determination of these women are recognized and celebrated. By promoting acceptance and understanding, he believed that barriers—both architectural and attitudinal—could be dismantled. This mission continues to inspire change today.
